A collaboration between us, the University of Westminster Architecture course, Cody Dock, and Webb Yates structural engineers.
One thing we have always been interested in is fostering relationships between Architecture and Fabrication. So a building project that came about from structural developments by Webb Yates in conjunction with Cody Dock and the university was an opportunity too good to miss.
The design of the building is based on a modular timber frame, and we were happy to feed our knowledge of the materials and process, and come up with a design optimised for off-site manufacture and great detailing.
CODY DOCK COMMUNITY HUB
The Community hub was a chance both to work with a learn from the students on the Architecture course, but also to get our hands on some fantastic Douglas Fir timber. Producing complex angled intersections demanded producing a series of complicated jigs, often 3d printed, and a super accurate 3d model so we could track produciton of all the parts.
When we brought it all to site in kit form, we could bolt it together and be sure of our dimensions. It also avoids long winded site joinery, and the whole building is extremely accurate.
The building is now a fantastic mixed use space, being used for growing, a range of talks, workshops and education, as well as having a fab pizza oven for events.
